WTAMU alum donates more than $200,000 to WT women’s golf and volleyball teams

CANYON, Texas (KAMR/KCIT) – A West Texas A&M University alum has established two new endowments that will provide support and scholarships to two teams in women’s athletics.

According to officials, Rick and Carole Couch have made a $50,000 gift and plan to donate an additional $175,000 to establish the Rick and Carole Couch Lady Buff Golf Program Fund. The fund will enhance player development and help finance travel to tournaments.

Officials said an additional planned gift of $175,000 will create the Couch Volleyball Scholarship Endowment, which will be an annual grant of at least $1,000.

While the gift will support two of WTAMU’s women’s sports, WT officials said the golf team is closest to the Couchs’ hearts.

Officials also noted that the women’s golf team recently advanced to the NCAA Division II Elite 8 for the third straight year and won the NCAA West Regional Championship in May.

“I love golfing myself, and it’s even more fun to watch those young women who can really hit a golf ball,” said Rick Couch. “They hit much better than me.”

Couch, a 1968 WT graduate, met Meredith Jameson, a 2005 and 2009 WT graduate, shortly after Jameson began coaching the team when he came to Canyon from the Dallas area to play in a WT golf tournament. Buffalo Club.

“For years and years, Rick has been our biggest fan of WT women’s golf,” said Jameson. “He means so much to us. And this gift means so much because he’s an alum and I’m an alum. We both bleed auburn. This gift really shows what WT means to him and Carole.”

WT officials noted that Couch said the gift is as meaningful to him as it is to the team: “I enjoyed my time at WT and we wanted to repay that in some way.”
