Who will play England next at Euro 2024? How the results were left Gareth Southgate’s team with a dream draw

He would never say something like that out loud, but England coach Gareth Southgate must regard the draw for the knockout round at the 2024 European Championship as almost a miracle.

The Three Lions failed to close out Group C play one way or another. They scored just two goals in three games and finished first with five points, ahead of Denmark and Slovenia, who managed just a draw in each of their three games.

After Wednesday’s final group day, which included a defeat to Portugal against Georgia and a 0-0 draw against Belgium that left them in second place behind Romania, England had little company among the elite national teams in the bottom half of the 16 – team bracket.

England will play the round of 16 against Slovakia on June 30. If the Three Lions win there, they will advance to the quarter-finals against the winner, Switzerland – Italy.

Their half of the group includes three teams in the top 10 of the FIFA world rankings: No. 5 England, No. 7 Netherlands and No. 10 Italy.

The top half of the draw features four top-10 teams and five ranked 16th or better: No. 2 France, No. 3 Belgium, No. 6 Portugal, No. 8 Spain and No. 16 Germany.

Who will play England next at Euro 2024?

England’s next match at Euro 2024 is in the round of 16 against Slovakia, who have reached this stage of the tournament only once since becoming an independent state.

Since the split of Czechoslovakia in 1993, Slovakia has competed independently and qualified for four major tournaments, including this European Championship.

They finished third in Group E, behind Romania and Belgium and ahead of Ukraine, even though all four teams achieved four points. Slovakia had a goal difference of zero, while Ukraine had a minus-1, which cost them a chance to advance.

England last played Slovakia in 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifying, winning both matches by a combined 3-2 scoreline. At the 2016 European Championship they played a goalless draw.

England have never lost to Slovakia and have a record of 5W-1D-0L overall.

How England got a ‘dream draw’ thanks to the results and group of the 2024 European Championship

With so many top teams in the top half of the group, many of the top players are too. It starts with Frenchman Kylian Mbappé, who played in the past two World Cup finals. But the list includes the Belgian Kevin De Bruyne, the German Ilkay Gundogan, the Portugal Bernardo Silva (and of course Cristiano Ronaldo) and the Spaniard Lamine Yamal.

Outside of a loaded England side, who somehow managed just two goals in three group games, the biggest name at the bottom of the table is probably a defender: Netherlands’ Virgil van Dijk, who still allowed three goals in Monday’s group decider Austria.

It looked like England would face the Netherlands in the round of 16, but Georgia’s surprise victory over Portugal on the final day of the group stage saw the draw changed with the Three Lions now playing Slovakia.

Should England advance, they will face either Switzerland or a less than convincing Italy in the quarter-finals. If they reach the final, however, they will only face Germany, Spain, France or Portugal.

Unless they delve deeper into what remains of Euro 2024, it will be difficult for Southgate to come up with reasonable excuses for the failure.

When is England’s next Euro 2024 match against Slovakia?

England go into the Round of 16 Euro 2024 match Slovakia up Sunday June 30 at the Veltins Arena in Gelsenkirchen.
