Whitehaven looks legit – ARCH-USA

The June team camps are over. The scrimmages are over. The exercises are all done. We won’t see high school basketball teams in action again until the fall, but I can give you something to look forward to as we inch closer to the 2024-2025 season.

Whitehaven looks legit

I love this team. I think pound for pound they are probably the best team in the city heading into next year and while things can change I love the makeup of this group from the starting line up all the way to the sixth man. I’m not sure there is a more talented team in the area. Does talent always win? No, but it is important to have. You can be a really good X and O coach but if you don’t have players it’s hard to win.

Coach Willie Kemp, in his second year, has plenty of talent. 6’6, 6’6, 6’8, are 3 of his 5 starters. Add to that one of the top five seniors in Memphis Taquez “King” Butler And 1.88 m Jarmon Brittman, who was one of the better players in 2A last year, and they scored a lot. Cam Brown, Dorion Bowen, Butler, KJ Smith and Ottabwa “Bob” Dickson they can all score just as well as Brittman.

Dickson, to be honest, sometimes I thought he was the best player in 16 AAAA basketball in their league last year. I think he, along with Bowen, is the key to their success. Butler can play either guard position with an offensive game that is as good as anyone in town. He can play make and takes advantage of all the talent, which makes life a little easier for him. Among all the Killer B’s, the W will have no problem scoring the ball.

Rebounding won’t be a problem for Dickson and Brittman, but defensively they will have to lean more forward. They have a defensive force in Smith that will chase most opposing guards into turnovers, but offense is their strong point. I expect them to be one of the highest scoring teams in the city next year and just be too much for most teams. Their depth is an issue, but this is the summer league and I’m sure other players may not be there, or if I’m being honest, they just haven’t transferred there yet. They could also have some guys playing football, so we’ll see. The point is, the Tigers look like a team with legitimate state aspirations.
