When will James Wood be drafted into Fantasy Baseball? (Week 13 update)

James Wood - Fantasy Baseball Prospects, Draft Sleepers, MLB Rankings

Sometimes an injury is the only thing that can stand in the way of a top prospect and his promotion in the big league. That certainly seems to be the case when it comes to Washington Nationals top prospect James Wood.

The hulking 6-foot-1 outfielder made his mark in spring training with four home runs and a 1.070 OPS in 22 games and continued to mash Triple-A pitching with a .355 average with nine home runs, 10 stolen bases and a 1.061 OPS over 202 plate appearances before a hamstring injury sent him to the injured list. As a result, Wood has been out of the closet since May 23.

Let’s dive in and take a look at Wood’s potential status, his injury and what fantasy managers can expect when his time on The Show arrives.

James Wood Prospect Update for Fantasy Baseball

It’s hard to imagine Wood would still be playing in the minor leagues if not for a hamstring injury. His production speaks for itself and even at 21 years old, he has worked his way through every minor league stop on his way to the game’s highest level.

The good news is that Wood has officially been removed from the injured list and will be in the starting lineup for Triple-A Rochester on Tuesday. As a result, it probably won’t be long before he’s in the nation’s capital.

Let’s take a look at the Nationals’ offensive ranks coming into play on Tuesday.

Home runs: 28th
Running: 23rd
OPS: 24th
ISO: 28th
wOBA: 25th
wRC+: 25th

While the Nationals are not targeting a championship run in the 2024 season, there is little point in keeping Wood in the minors any longer, health permitting.

James Wood Outlook for Fantasy Baseball

Wood certainly possesses the desirable combination of power and speed that fantasy managers crave coming out of the minor leagues. At just 20 years old in 2023, Wood combined for 26 home runs and 18 stolen bases in 129 games between High-A and Double-A. He met Triple-A when he threw head-on out of the gate in 2024 when the 2021 second-round pick knocked on the door of the major leagues, about a year away from the start of the 2023 season at High-A.

Whether he can hit the ground running in the big leagues remains to be seen, but fantasy managers shouldn’t wait much longer, barring an injury setback, for Wood’s fantasy impact in 2024.
