Specially for the PRESS

This past week, the Lady Tarpons volleyball team competed in the Harlingen Consolidated Independent School District (HCISD) summer tournament where they participated in three days of pool play.

While playing in the bronze division, they defeated La Feria, setting up a match with Harlingen’s second-place team in the championship game. Although they lost to the Lady Cards, the Port Isabel (PI) girls showed teamwork and hustle to finish second in the bronze division. PI volleyball head coach Johvonne Howard was proud of their effort and resilience. “Overall, it was a fun experience to play for the championship,” Howard said.

Leading the charge were seniors Emily Burrage and Halle Mata. They were joined by juniors Nadia Flaig, Julieta Ruiz, Isabel Cuevas and Kymberlie Estrada. Freshmen Layla Mata and Isabel Ochoa were in attendance, hoping to be part of the upcoming varsity squad, which would have to adapt to the faster passing game and learn the offensive and defensive schemes.

Next up, the next four volleyball players, Nadia Flaig, Emily Burrage, Issabel Cuevas, and Precious Vasquez, traveled to McAllen, TX on June 17-18 to participate in the Torok Volleyball Camp. The girls were taught by University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) Head Coach Carol Torok and her staff at Cavazos Sports Institute. Monday’s session focused on defense. Tuesday’s morning session focused on passing and serving. This was followed by an afternoon session focusing on hitting and setting.

Coach Howard stated that the girls “enjoyed the clinic and learned some valuable exercises and lessons.” Additionally, she was pleased that the girls were able to showcase their skills during the clinic, as “exposure to college personnel is not common,” said Coach Howard. She also wanted to express her gratitude to the following two sponsors: Isabel Jensen and Frank Davalos Jr.

The upcoming Port Isabel Early College High School (PIECHS) volleyball season begins on August 5th at 6:30am in the high school gym. All participants must complete their medical history, physical exams and all grade one forms.
