Emily Van Egmond and Kaitlyn Torpey included in Matildas selection for Olympic Games

SAN DIEGO – San Diego Wave FC and the Olympic Games Australia today announced that midfielder Emily van Egmond and defender Kaitlyn Torpey have been named to the 18-player Matildas roster that will compete in Paris 2024.

Van Egmond will compete in her third Olympic Games and has been a prominent figure for Australia since 2010, earning her first cap at the age of 16. The Australian vice-captain has appeared in more than 130 matches and scored 30 goals in her international career, while representing her country in four FIFA Women’s World Cups. Since joining the Wave in 2022, the veteran has played in 46 games.

This is the first Olympic Games for Torpey, who recently made her Australian first-team debut on February 24, 2024. In her second ever appearance for the Matildas, she scored for her country in the 2024 Olympic qualifiers. The 24-year-old defender joined the Wave from Melbourne City in pre-season and made six appearances for the club.

Australia will play the United States, Germany and Zambia in Group B. The women’s football Olympics are held in seven cities, while Australia plays in four: Paris, Nantes, Lyon or Marseille. Kick-off will begin prior to the Opening Ceremony, with matches starting on July 25 and ending on August 10.
