The Golden Boot award is given to the player who scores the most goals at the European Championship, and Ronaldo received the award during the 2020 European Championship (which took place in 2021 due to the pandemic).

Ronaldo finished the tournament with five goals and one assist in 360 minutes of action, earning him the tiebreaker against Czech Republic’s Patrik Schick, who secured five goals and no assists in 404 minutes. Ronaldo became the first Golden Boot winner to secure the award via a tiebreak.

Ronaldo has rejoined the Portuguese national football team for the quadrennial tournament, and the club is already off to a good start. Portugal defeated the Czech Republic 2–1 in their first Group F match.

Although McGregor has placed big bets on Ronaldo to win the Golden Boot this year, the Portuguese forward did not score a goal in Tuesday’s match. He will soon get another chance, as Portugal will play against Türkiye on June 22.

Ronaldo has had a fantastic season with 46 goals in 48 games played, 35 of which came from playing with Al Nassr in the Professional League. While it is not clear how many goals Ronaldo will score at the 2024 European Championship, McGregor may have made a smart bet as the football legend has scored 46 goals this season.

Ronaldo and McGregor have developed somewhat of a friendship, especially after speaking in Saudi Arabia in December during the “Day of Reckoning” boxing match, when Anthony Joshua took on former UFC heavyweight champion Francis Ngannou. The image McGregor shared with his bet is from the event, when the pair were laughing next to each other.

Time will tell if McGregor made the right bet, but Ronaldo is one of the best scorers in the world, so it can be considered a fairly safe bet even if the bet is for a lot of money.
