Bulls appoint new Currie Cup coach

Phiwe Nomlomo has been appointed head coach of the Bulls for the 2024 Carling Currie Cup campaign, the organization announced.

Werner Kruger, Jean Tiedt and Kennedy Tsimba will collaborate with the alma mater of Selborne College.

World Rugby Hall of Famer and former flyhalf at Loftus, Tsimba will provide the backline. Meanwhile, Tiedt, former coach of Pukke at North-West University, will focus on defense.

Kruger – who made more than a century of Super Rugby appearances for the franchise during his playing days – will provide the forwards.

More than an honor

Nomlomo says the opportunity to be part of the coaching unit for this Currie Cup campaign is more than just an honour.

“This is more than just an honor; it conveys the confidence of the entire organization to lead our side in a competition that we value and respect for the influence it has on rugby in our country. It is also another opportunity to compete and showcase the talent we have in our ranks.”

“Our faithful will have the opportunity to see our new recruits in action as rugby enters its traditional winter season. It will be good to play in some areas that we don’t visit regularly.”

Nomlomo says his side is on a quick turnaround to make final adjustments to the squad ahead of the start of the competition on July 7.

“We have a quick turnaround from the VURC to the Carling Currie Cup, which is a unique type of pressure for us, one that we enjoy because it means the franchise is excelling in all competitions,”

The key to the Bulls brand identity

The Bulls want to ensure that the brand of rugby represented at franchise level is reflected in the provincial competition.

The Tsomo resident added: “We now need to ensure that everyone on the team is aligned on what our brand identity will be for this campaign and make minor adjustments ahead of the launch in a week.”

“We have players who want to get on the field, rugby coaches who want them to do well and a supporter who wants to see their club go to the limit. This is a wonderful recipe for an exciting season ahead,” he concludes.

Nomlomo joined the Vodacom Bulls in August 2023 as an assistant coach with a focus on the skills hub alongside Kennedy. He was previously with Durban outfit the Sharks with other prominent stints with the 2019 SA Schools A side, the Border Craven Week squad and his former school’s first team between 2018 and 2019. He was also the head of the EP Kings academy in 2016.
