Fraser falls in the women’s 76-kilogram weight class. She is joined on the 18-person team by her Brock Wrestling Club teammates Mia Friesen and Callum Knox.

“The team is made up of our best next generation of elite athletes and features some of our senior national champions,” Wrestling Canada Lutte president Chris Woodcroft said in a statement. “This international experience will prove to be a valuable springboard for the U23 World Championships to be held later this autumn. Wrestling Canada Lutte is confident that our athletes are well prepared to compete against the best in the Pan-Am region.”

Fraser is scheduled to wear the Maple Leaf again at the U23 World Championships from October 21 to 27 in Tirana, Albania. She was a quarter-finalist in 72kg at the 2022 U23 World Championships in Pontevedra, Spain.

Fraser recently won gold in 76kg at the Canadian U23 Championships in Calgary. The St. Patrick’s graduate is a former member of the Sarnia Bluewater Wrestling Club and is now a student at Brock University.

She was nominated for the Brock Female Athlete of the Year Award this spring after a dominant college season in which she went undefeated and won every first-round match.

She won her second consecutive U Sports gold medal and was a first-team all-Canadian. She also won her second straight OUA gold.

She placed third in 76kg at the Canadian team trials last December.

OCAA Fall Sports Release Schedules

The Ontario Colleges Athletic Association has released its schedules for the baseball, softball and football seasons.

The Lambton Lions have played nine doubleheaders in their 18-game baseball season. They start at Fanshawe on Sunday September 8 and play their home opener against Sheridan at Errol Russell Park on Saturday September 14.

The Lions are guaranteed a berth in the OCAA Championship as they host the six-team tournament Oct. 17-19. The top two teams will go straight to the double knockout stage, while the four others will play sudden death matches to qualify for the double knockout.

The Lions begin their 24-game softball schedule Saturday, September 7 in Kitchener with games against Conestoga and Humber. They play Sheridan and Seneca on Sunday, September 8 at Germain Park.

The OCAA Championship takes place October 17-19 in Oshawa.

The Lions men’s and women’s soccer teams open their 10-game schedule on Saturday, September 7 against Mohawk at Norm Perry Park. The OCAA Championships are October 25-27.

Sarnia Men’s Golf Invitational Tournament

The Sarnia Golf and Country Club will hold its annual men’s invitational Friday and Saturday.

The 129-player field includes former champions Steve Brown, Jeff Corner, Graham Hill and defending champion Adam Graham. Other notable participants include Pete McMenemy, Eric Pattenaude, Graham Bell, Heath McCormick and Graeme Brunet.

Spectators are welcome. The game starts on Friday at 7:30 am. On Saturday the leaders and low flights start after 1 p.m

U16 Sturgeon after shutout win

The Sarnia U16 Sturgeon (4-1) are one game out of first place in the AA West Division of the Ontario Summer Football League after defeating the North Halton Tide 35-0 on Saturday in Georgetown.

The U14 Sturgeon (3-2) lost 22-9 to the Niagara Generals in St. Catharines.

On Saturday, the U18 Sturgeon (2-2) will visit the Waterloo Jr. Warriors. The U12 Sturgeon (1-2) host the Chatham-Kent Cougars at Norm Perry Park on Sunday at noon.
