BREAKING: 2024 NFL Supplemental Draft Has Crucial Update After League Memo Delivered to All 32 Teams

An often forgotten part of the NFL offseason calendar is the supplemental draft. And honestly, for good reason.

The last player taken from the supplemental draft was Washington State safety Jalen Thompson in 2019, who was taken in the fifth round by the Arizona Cardinals.

While Thompson performed better than most; the Cardinals signed him to a three-year, $40 million extension in 2022, the draft hasn’t acquired a Pro Bowler since the talented but troubled Josh Gordon was selected by the Cleveland Browns in 2012.

What is the Supplemental NFL Draft?

The supplemental draft is reserved for NFL prospects who had eligibility affected or missed the deadline to enter the regular NFL Draft.

This is often for players with educational or behavioral problems, such as academic exclusion or off-field problems. For example, Josh Gordon was unable to enter the 2012 NFL Draft due to a failed marijuana drug test.

But it appears the lack of prospects generated by the supplemental draft in recent years has put pressure on the league, and as a result, the NFL has decided it won’t happen in 2024.

Additional design canceled for 2024, what does this mean for the future?

It’s unlikely that even the most avid NFL fans will actually miss the Supplement Draft, even though it produces a quality player every five years or so.

The bigger question lies in whether this could mark the beginning of the end of the supplemental draft for subsequent years, or if this is a one-off year where the league was on the brink and certain that no additional players were likely to be added would be selected.

Completely including the supplemental draft could potentially give rise to issues with a select number of players not being eligible to participate in the NFL through the draft format.

But as we’ve seen with the loosening of the transfer portal and the NIL rulings – often to the chagrin of NCAA head coaches, allowing players to switch schools as often as desired and capitalize on their brand – many of the problems with ineligibility disappeared. dropped, which is why there have been no additional draft selections for five years.

Area Scouts cheer after seeing League Memo

The big winners from this decision are the area scouts, who, according to Jim Nagy, will be more than happy to save themselves a lot of tedious and mostly unimportant work in their precious time with their families.

Deciphering whether a “red flag” is really a red flag, or simply a miscommunication or misunderstanding, can be one of the most difficult evaluation factors for both GMs and area scouts, and the latter will no doubt be happy to be rid of what has become one. of the more tedious tasks in their job description.

Frankly, it seems likely that the NFL will have to do away with the annual supplemental draft format going forward if the trend of no truly draftable players entering and being selected by franchises continues.

If and when a player ultimately requires an additional draft, the NFL and Roger Goodell will no doubt find a solution, utilizing the flexibility that has seen the sport rise to the now undisputed pinnacle of American football over the past few years. food chain. of decades.
